QR codes: What you need to know

QR Codes seem to have taken off recently and I love that I’ve had an opportunity to learn more about them. Since it is such a new technology in the United States we are ALL still learning more about this amazing technology every day. I really believe that the adoption of QR codes to your marketing strategy is a positive thing and will add an exciting element to your current traditional and Social Media Marketing Strategy.

QR Codes, although becoming more mainstream in the United States, have been around since the 1990′s in Japan. QR Code are 2D barcodes used to allow people access to more information easily. As we grow in technology and have less time, so we are always searching for ways to access more information, quicker. QR codes allow us to do this.

So to answer a few questions:

  • WHAT What do we use to create a QR Code? You can use a QR code Generator, which can be found on my QR Code Products Blog
  • WHEN: When should we use QR codes? It is great to use QR codes to promote a new product, a release of a website or promotion. Promotional Materials with QR Codes are becoming very popular.
  • WHY: Why use QR codes? Anytime you would need to give people quick access to your information.
  • HOW: How do we scan QR Codes: You can scan them by using your iPhone ,  Android  or Blackberry phone. You would first have to grab a QR App for your phone.

  1. What are your thoughts on EZ Code?

I think its a great idea in theory. However as a new technology there needs to be a uniformity in QR codes. Too many different and proprietary codes confuse and frustrate people with technology that already has a bit of a learning curve. This is one of the reasons that I believe Microsoft Tag hasn’t done that well.

I think it is very tricky to use a different type of QR Code that would require a scanner that is not universal. People are a bit overwhelmed with new technology sometimes because of its quick growth so I think sticking with something simple and universal is the best way. I do love that so many companies are diving into this new technology.

    • Very nice Post! Was looking for info on QR codes for a while! Thanks for sharing.

From your point of view as a blogger, would you consider putting QR code on the website ? Have you seen such example or maybe someone has shared success story of using QR code ?

I am asking, coz what I’ve seen so far was – QR on posters, business cards… But is it preferable for user to see QR Code on the screen instead of actual info? Interesting to know your point of view…

Thanks again for the post, will be glad reading you!

Hi! Thank you so much for taking time to comment on my blog and you are very welcome. QR Codes can be good on blogs, I do have a few on my blogs but for me they are mostly decorative when I use them on my blogs. When I have QR codes on my blog I usually create an image links as well. For me one of the most effective purposes of QR codes in marketing is tying an offline marketing campaign with online marketing. So QR codes on business cards, poster, flyers and offline advertising is a great way to pull people onto your website, Facebook Page, Mobile site, promotional landing page etc with a print or offline advertisement.
